Move over, Maelstrom Wanderer — there’s a new cascade commander in town! Jeweled Lotus has been one of the most talked-about cards in Commander Legends. While the mana base may be powerful, it’s also a weak spot. It will probably go in my five-color Nekusar-style deck in order to loop Wheel of Fortune/Windfall/Winds of Change until I find Molten Psyche and then loop that and win. The real all-star of the deck, though, is Valakut Awakening. Wheel of Fortune is a Rise of Kingdoms event where you spend Gems to spin the wheel to get the limited Legendary Heroes and various valuable rewards. Scott is an Irish content creator and the Head of Budget Magic for the Izzet League. There’s also a small sacrifice synergy package, with Collateral Damage and Kazuul’s Fury providing a lot of damage. It’s an uncounterable creature that replaces itself and scales into the game. This is a pretty standard control deck for the most part, and there’s a slew of fantastic options available at the common and uncommon rarities to make a pretty effective build. Its ability to ignore the “legend rule” will allow you to make multiple copies of legendary creatures with effects like Rite of Replication. That said, I’m excited to see what people will do to offset the problems and maximize Hazoret’s value. Liesa, one of Avacyn’s angel sisters, also appears on a card for the first time. Where this gets really out of hand is when you have Obosh, the Preypiercer on board, which will also double the damage output from these Fling-esque spells. Part-dragon, part-serpent, this terrifying Planeswalker has the ability to gain control of all commanders, unleashing seemingly unlimited power. Opposition Agent‘s ability to Stifle fetchland activations and steal tutor targets makes it one of the biggest three-mana threats since True-Name Nemesis. Lastly, we come to the deck that can satisfy even the most discerning card draw aficionado: Ominous Fox. Like Black Lotus, it will give you three mana for free, so long as you use that mana to cast your commander. To me, a budget Arena deck is one that contains no more than ten rare wildcards, and up to four mythic rares (avoiding these altogether, if possible). We’re also spoiled for choice with removal in this deck. All these cards are legal in Commander, as well as Legacy and Vintage, and any card printed at common in the set is now legal in Pauper. You’ll need three booster packs to draft Commander Legends, just as you would in a normal Booster Draft. Clones are valuable in Commander because of their flexibility, but Sakashima of a Thousand Faces can enable some truly terrifying board states. Commander Legends features a handful of valuable disruptive creatures. The best upgrade for the deck would be to add Steam Vents, Riverglide Pathway, and Raugrin Triome to increase consistency. Fireblade Charger and Grim Initiate give you some extra value with their death triggers, making them excellent sacrifice fodder. Several hit versions of "Wheel of Fortune" were released in 1952. To make this easier on players, Commander Legends includes several monocolored “partner” legends that you can pick up throughout the draft. Rootweaver Druid is an interesting play on Commander 2013‘s Tempt with Discovery. The mana base is a huge part of the deck’s game plan — you can’t draw cards without lands! If you prefer to win by attacking with creatures, consider making her one of your commanders! Oh and Narset's Reversal is an absolute banger if you have a Library of Leng. Shuffle the deck and flip your way through the Wheel, then call out a letter and try to solve the puzzle in the puzzle deck. Decks with companions also feel much more focused, and allow for greater exploration of themes and mechanics. I hope these three decks helped to showcase the unique strategies available to you in Magic’s newest format, and how a companion can really help to boost the power of budget decks. Playsets of Forgotten Cave and Lonely Sandbar are another eight cards that help enable Ominous Seas, giving the deck a frightening level of consistency. Mnemonic Deluge will be a major boon for “spells matter” decks. These would be good inclusions right now, but will likely be unnecessary in time. Exchange your life total with another player’s, or force two opponents to trade — either way, you may come out ahead!
